It's difficult to overstate the need that local charities are seeing this holiday season. The need for services is up anywhere between 30-70% for some non-profits. One local food pantry shared recently that people who normally bring in food donations are showing up in line to receive food. Many pantries are reducing the amount they are providing to families to stretch their food supplies a bit farther. Unfortunately when the economy struggles, demand for services for many non-profits go up, while donations go down. You can make a difference right now, in a number of different ways. First of all, you can give online to any of 300 local non-profits. Your donation goes directly to the non-profit. Or if you prefer to mail a check to them, you can find their address from our list of non-profits. Secondly, you can browse our Gifts that Make a Difference catalog to find a specific item you'd like to donate for. It's not only money though that can make a difference. Check out this wonderful list of 71 Ways to Change the World without opening your wallet. If you can't squeeze some of these in before Christmas, that's okay: January and February are great times to help organizations through the post-holiday winter months, when donations might be down. Be part of people making a difference here in Michiana: organizations need you now more than ever. |
