Over 400 people volunteered locally to make a difference in the Michiana community for Make a Difference Day. All around Michiana people were doing cleaning projects, helping with fundraisers and events, working donation drives, and organizing items for non-profit organizations. Fifteen different non-profit organizations received a helping hand from eager volunteers ready to tackle a substantial project for the organization. You can read the press release here.
Nationally over 3 million volunteers took on all sorts of projects across America. You can read more about it here.
The weather was wet and overcast but that didn't stop committed volunteers from showing up at their projects. Make a Difference Michiana wishes to thank all the non-profit organizations, sponsors, and volunteers that made the event possible.
More pictures and descriptions of the event coming soon!
A current look at the Make a Difference Day map. Volunteers will be making a difference at over 30 different locations in Michiana on Saturday (some we couldn't even fit on this map). For a navigable map click here.
On October 27th millions of Americans will be making a difference around the nation. Here are some more events going on locally that you might want to check out:
Discovery Kids has been collecting household items, clothes, and toys all week to give away at their Un-Garage Sale, a place for people to find and take home items they need for free. Donations will be accepted, but everything is free to whoever needs it. The event takes place on Saturday from 10AM-2PM at 333 N. Main St. at the 1st United Methodist Church.
The Children's Dispensary is sponsoring a booksale to benefit children with special needs in Michiana. The booksale is Saturday from 10AM-10PM at the Barnes & Noble on Grape Road and features performances throughout the day.
Davenport University is running a Donation Drive throughout this week to benefit the Center for the Homeless for Make a Difference Day. You can drop off items at the Student Lounge at the South Bend campus through Friday. Email us for a list of immediate needs for the Center.
You can still sign up for a project for Saturday if you are able to volunteer, but please do so ASAP so that the non-profit can plan accordingly to host your volunteer group. Here is the project list!
Our map is seeing a lot more blue as projects fill up for Make a Difference Day, but we've still got some great projects available!

Jan Caudell was the contact person for the local Parrot Heads group as they volunteered for Make a Difference Day in 2006. She generously provided this reflection on her group's experience last year.
Last year for Make A Difference Day, the Parrot Heads in Michiana volunteered to help clean the Albright United Methodist Church as they tried to put their lives back in order after suffering a devastating fire in the weeks prior to MDD. Eleven of our members showed up that morning in serious work clothes to begin the process of cleaning what rooms were left standing. We scrubbed floors and walls, washed windows, scraped up floor tiles, and did whatever else was asked of us.
We also did something not quite so tangible, and that was to let the people of Albright know that people in the community cared about them. We laughed with them, listened to their stories, and their plans for the future. Though the building smelled strongly of smoke, there was a "fire", this time of hope, in the people we met. And, we made connections that day that have led us to help others in the community.
Make A Difference Day was a wonderful experience for all of us who participated that day. As Parrot Heads, our goal is to leave our community a little better than we found it. We do many fundraisers and volunteer for many charitable events. I must say, however, that helping to clean the Albright Church was one of my personal highlights for the year.
